Offset errors look like one side of the note “bled through” to the other. However, the offset is a mirror image of the note’s opposite side. This error occurs when a sheet of currency fails to enter the press. As such, the plate contacts the impression cylinder. When the next currency sheet is inserted it receives not only the intended printing on the correct side, but a transfer or offset printing on the opposite side as well. The ink lightens with each sheet that is fed. Not surprisingly, the amount of the design imprinted onto the impression cylinder dictates the size and shape of the offset. Offsets occur front to back or back to front. The rich, bold offsets demand the highest price.
