Dali interpreted the dream in this lithograph of the bakers strike which was written in the book, "Les Songes Drolatiques de Pantagruel" published in 1565, the story of Pantagruel and his father, Gargantua, 2 giants who roamed the earth. In the center of the art is the giant pot with the lid partially opened There is the face of the chef on the pot with, Arms And legs. In one hand is the butcher's knife  And in the other is a spatula. On top of the head is bread and there is a lid with a face on top of the head with sausages and beans. Under the feet are more loaves of bread, The weight of the Food Is overwhelming for the earth and collapses on top of it. All On the barren surrealist background. The bread and beans Dalia said to symbolize the dependence or recognition of life-supporting fundamentals (food and food sources) even in the face of social and political turmoil and war. Perhaps man’s dependence on food matters just as much to its survival as the politics of war.

The book describes a dispute. The bakers of Lerne refuse to sell cakes to the shepherds of Grangosier. In the quarrel, a shepherd fells a baker, and King Picrochole of Lerne invades the country. Grangosier bakes cartloads of cakes to appease Picrochole, but to no avail, for no one dares oppose Picrochole except doughty Friar John of the Funnels. Finally, Grangosier asks Gargantua to come to his aid. Gargantua fights valiantly. Cannonballs seem to him as grape seeds, and when he combs his hair, cannonballs drop out. After he conquers the army of Lerne, he generously sets all the prisoners free.

Les Songes  Drôlatiques de Pantagruel, Publisged by CarpentierEditions Celami, Geneva, 1973 (M. & L. 1398-1422) printed in France.

"Les Songes drolatiques de Pantagruel" (Pantagruel's droll dreams) The comical Dreams of Pantagruel was a 16th century novel by Francois Rabelais, illustrated with grotesque woodcut figures, partly reminding of the imagery of Hieronymus Bosch. These figures have inspired to Dali to create his own graphic series from which one print is offered here.

In 1973 Dali interpreted these 16th century dreams as only Dali could do.

Pantagruel, the hero of Francois Rabelais’s 1532 Novel, with his motto "do what thou wilt" is the fitting name for the art for auction.

Pantagruel (c.1532) was the first volume in a series of five connected books written by François Rabelais a French Benedictine monk, physician and humanist scholar.  The work was given the overall title of The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel.  It relates the story of two giants, Gargantua and his son Pantagruel, and is set in an imaginary medieval monastery where the strict, austere rules of monastic life are completely subverted.  In Rabelais’ monastery life is governed by free will and worldly pleasure is regarded as a legitimate need and aim of human nature.  In addition to his satire of clerical education and monastic life the text contained much crude, earthy and scatological humor and the term Rabelaisian is often used to describe outrageous, bawdy behavior. As a leading Surrealist Dali was clearly attracted by the elements of fantasy, satire, subversion, eroticism and dreamlike material contained in Rabelais’ text for Pantagruel because of their similarity to basic Surrealist ideas.

The work of Salvador Dali (1904-1989) is associated with the surrealist movement of the 20th Century. A diverse and multi-talented artist, Dali is considered one of the most collected artists today, and his works offer an incredible opportunity for enormous appreciation in value. In addition to his original works, Dali produced works on paper for reproduction using dry point, etching, woodcut, and lithography. Many of his works are held in prestigious museums, private and public collections world-wide.

Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was one of the main representatives of surrealism and ranks among the most famous artists of the 20th century.
