Order of the Sacred Treasure 8th Class Medal Showa Japanese Military Badge

Order of the Sacred Treasure 8th Class Medal Showa Japanese Military Badge. The "Zuihosho", variously called the Secret Treasure, Mirror and Gems, etc., was founded by Imperial Edict No. 1 of January 4, 1888, which states, "...this is divided into eight classes and is bestowed on persons who have rendered distinguished service. The badge is decorated with the Mirror and Gems." It was extended to ladies by Imperial Edict No.232 of May 22, 1919. "The Order of the sacred Treasure is bestowed on ladies who have rendered distinguished services." However, comparatively few have been awarded to women, especially in higher classes. The Sacred Treasure is the lowest ranking order and is both civil and military. It has been primarily granted for long and faithful service, the class depending on the recipient's rank or position as well as his length of service. Government officials of the first rank "chokunin" received the 4th class for 5 years service, the 2nd class for 7 years and the 1st class for 10 years. Officials of the second rank "Sokunin" received the 6th class for 12 years, and those of the third rank "hannin" received the 8th class after 18 years of service. The 6th class was awarded to members of the Lower House of the Diet after 8 years, and the 8th class to schoolteachers, postmen and policemen after 20 years. The order has also quite frequently been awarded to foreigners, both in an honorary way and for cultural or social merit to Japan.

The Eight Class Sacred Treasure Silver Award is 37mm entirely of silver. The design is that of the center of the highest class badge in enlarged form, with raised polished mirror and necklace and a grained or oxidized ground. The ribbon is a triangular fold in white and yellow.
