The 1965 U.S. Open was legendary for many reasons. Gary Player owned a three-stroke lead over Kel Nagle heading into the final round, but on the 18th hole, Player's 28-foot putt fell four inches short. An 18-hole playoff ensued Monday in which Player captured the title with a three-stroke win. The emotions ran deep for Player as the South African-born golfer became the first international winner of the U.S. Open in 38 years.
