Louis was the only Hungarian monarch to receive the epithet "Great". Both his chivalrous personality and his successful military campaigns contributed to the development of his fame as a "great king". Louis waged wars in almost each year during his reign, in Poland, on a crusade against the pagan Lithuanians, in Croatia and in Italy. The Saracen's head is a pun on the surname of Jacobus Saracenus and his brother, Johannes, courtiers of Italian descent who were ennobled by Louis and became masters of the mint.
