William Frederick Cody (February 26, 1846 - January 10, 1917) was an American scout, bison hunter & showman extraordinaire. Bill started working for his father at eleven, entered the Union army at seventeen in 1863 and served until the war's end in 1865. He contracted with the Kansas Pacific Railway to supply bison meat to the workers shortly afterward. He is purported to have shot 4,282 Buffalo in an eighteen month span. He even entered an eight hour contest with William Comstock for the privilege of the name "buffalo" in front of Bill. He shot 68 to Comstock's 48 and the legend was born.

He became a civilian scout for the army in 1872 and was awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous bravery.

In 1883 he founded the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Appearing in his shows at various times were such famous individuals as Sitting Bull, Wild Bill Hickok, Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, and Pawnee Bill. He continued with his show in America and around the world, performing for heads of state as well as the general public. He earned international acclaim and performed right up until his death in 1917.

"Don't ever say you are sorry for 'being caught in the moment; because at that moment you were EXACTLY where you wanted to be." - "Buffalo Bill" Cody.
