The images on this round were designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the Indian Head Gold Eagle series in the first part of the 20th century. The coins were so popular that today they are featured on a number of bullion pieces such as these Silvertowne rounds. Saint-Gauden’s design proved to be controversial, as he used the image of Lady Liberty in an Indian headdress with the inscription of the word LIBERTY, whereas previous Indian Head designs used the image of Native Americans. Lady Liberty is encircled by thirteen stars. The reverse side of this round features a three-quarter profiled view of the American eagle standing on a branch. The eagle is encircled by the words ONE OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER above and the Silvertowne insignia below.
