Custom frame measures approximately 18" x 32" in size and features an original envelope that has been hand-signed by Abraham Lincoln (D. 1865) and Edwin Stanton (D. 1869). Please note, the inscription in the hand of Lincoln reads: "Please see Mr. Butler May 23, 1863." The inscription in the hand of Stanton reads: "Referred to the Quarter Master General for Report." The display also includes a postcard as well as an Abraham Lincoln commemorative coin.

The envelope was dated May 23, 1863, and carried a highly significant note regarding a dispute with the Illinois Central Railroad and the Federal Government. The note was written by Abraham Lincoln 5 months after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect and 2 months before the Battle of Gettysburg, both critical to the Union’s success. A copy of the note is included for your pleasure.

Included within the frame is a 1940 colorized postcard of the presentation of the Emancipation Proclamation to Lincoln’s cabinet, of which Edwin Stanton, as Secretary of War, was a prominent member. A bronze medal of Abraham Lincoln created by the Friends of Gettysburg is featured in the display as well as two historical plaques containing the dates of Lincoln’s and Stanton’s lives as well as significant quotes by each.

Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, the country's greatest moral, cultural, constitutional, and political crisis. He succeeded in preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, bolstering the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy.
