Marines in landing craft hit the beach at Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945. At the left center is Mt. Suribachi, nick-named Hot Rock by the Marines who took the island. This aerial photograph was flown to Guam, transmitted by radio, and was printed in an American newspaper within 15 hours after it was made..
