Letter is dated April 27, 1815, and measures 7.5" x 10" in size. Hand signed by James Monroe (D. 1831).

Letter reads in part: Washington, Apr. 27, 1815 to the Governor of Georgia concerning the so-called 'Yazoo Claims'. In part: '...I have the honor to inclose a letter received from the Board of Commissioners for the adjustment of Yazoo claims, sitting in this city...certain information is required in their deliberations, which can only be obtained thro' the Executive of Georgia...give the necessary directions for the early collection and transmission of the information...' In 1785 the Georgia legislature granted four companies huge tracts of land in Alabama and Mississippi, and it later came to light that all of those who voted for the grant had been bribed. In 1802 Georgia sold these claims to the federal government, and the claimant's resulting legal challenge was upheld with the claims being repaid. Two small holes at fold junctures and some toning, overall good to very good.
