Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, was an American professional boxer and one of the most significant figures in the history of sports. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time and an iconic cultural and political figure.

Ali first gained fame as an amateur boxer, winning a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. He turned professional later that year and quickly rose through the ranks of the heavyweight division, earning the nickname "The Louisville Lip" due to his brash and confident personality.

In 1964, at the age of 22, Ali won the heavyweight championship of the world by defeating Sonny Liston in a major upset. Soon after, he announced that he had converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali, which he considered his "slave name." He became a vocal advocate for civil rights and social justice and refused to be drafted into the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to the war. As a result, he was stripped of his boxing titles and banned from the sport for several years.

In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Ali's conviction for draft evasion, and he made a highly anticipated return to boxing. He went on to have a legendary career, engaging in some of the most memorable and historic bouts in boxing history, including his rivalries with Joe Frazier and George Foreman.

Notable fights in Ali's career include:

The Fight of the Century (March 8, 1971): Ali vs. Frazier I - Ali suffered his first professional defeat against Joe Frazier in a grueling 15-round match.

The Rumble in the Jungle (October 30, 1974): Ali vs. Foreman - Ali employed his "rope-a-dope" strategy to tire out the heavily favored George Foreman and won the fight in the eighth round, reclaiming the heavyweight title.

The Thrilla in Manila (October 1, 1975): Ali vs. Frazier III - Ali defeated Frazier in their epic third encounter, which is considered one of the greatest boxing matches in history.

Ali retired from boxing in 1981 with a record of 56 wins (37 by knockout) and 5 losses. His contributions to the sport and his impact on society extend far beyond the boxing ring. He was known for his charisma, wit, and strong convictions. Ali's influence as an athlete and activist is still felt today, and he remains an enduring symbol of courage, determination, and social consciousness. Muhammad Ali passed away on June 3, 2016, but his legacy continues to inspire and resonate with people around the world.
