Larry Bird's illustrious basketball journey began in French Lick, Indiana, where he first gained attention for his exceptional skills during his high school years at Springs Valley High School. Bird's prowess on the court earned him a scholarship to play for the Indiana University Hoosiers, but he decided to pursue a different path and instead attended Indiana State University. It was at Indiana State that Bird truly made a mark, leading the Sycamores to the NCAA Championship game in 1979, where they faced off against a Michigan State team led by Magic Johnson in a historic matchup. Despite Indiana State falling short, Bird's stellar performance earned him numerous accolades, including the Naismith College Player of the Year award.

Bird's remarkable college career set the stage for his entry into the NBA, where he was selected by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. Bird's impact on the Celtics was immediate and profound, transforming the team into a championship contender.
