Ralph D. “Hoot” Gibson is one of the few “MiG killers” to become an Ace in Korea. On 18 June 1951, ""Hoot"" Gibson was leading a flight of six F-86 Sabres on combat air patrol in the ""MiG Alley"" area of North Korea. He turned his element into a group of attacking MiG-15s. Hoot downed one of the MiG aircraft and broke up their formation. Even when his gunsight failed, he led his element into another fight--though greatly outnumbered. He drew to close range and knocked down his second MiG. Then he pressed his attacks until the MiGs retreated!
