James E. Swett shot down 7 Japanese dive-bombers on his first combat mission! On 7 April 1943, Swett took off on his first combat mission of World War II. Leading a flight of 4 Wildcats from Guadalcanal, Swett could see more than 150 Japanese aircraft attacking Tulagi Harbor. As 15 started their dives on the ships below, Swett and his flight slid in behind them. Six .50 caliber machine guns blazed as Swett exploded 3 enemy bombers. Pulling out, Swett's F4F was hit by friendly antiaircraft fire which damaged his wing flaps and disabled one of his guns. Separated from his flight, Swett caught 6 more dive-bombers regrouping. He attacked. As he moved in on the fifth Val, and his eighth kill of the day, Swett's luck began to run out. The Vals rear gunner blasted Swett's windscreen, wounding him and damaging his oil cooler. Swett ditched in Tulagi Bay, but was soon rescued. His actions earned him a Medal of Honor.
