Rawlings jersey with everything sewn on, size 48. Hand-signed and inscribed by Roberto Clemente Jr.
September 30, 1972, is a significant date in the life and career of Roberto Clemente, the legendary Puerto Rican baseball player. On this day, Clemente recorded his 3,000th and final career hit in Major League Baseball. He achieved this milestone while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in a game against the New York Mets at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Clemente's 3,000th hit was a double off Mets pitcher Jon Matlack.
This achievement was particularly notable because Clemente became the first Latin American player to reach 3,000 hits. Sadly, it also turned out to be the last hit of his career, as he tragically died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972, while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Clemente's legacy extends beyond his on-field accomplishments; he is remembered as a humanitarian and a trailblazer for Latin American players in Major League Baseball.
